A Love Letter to the One I Made Up

Directed by Rachel Gutgarts
Israeil / 2018 / 6:05 mins

A lonely walk home is intertwined with an underwater fantasy world. The combination between reality and fantasy is portrayed in a love letter addressed to an imaginary “perfect” man. The film displays a critical, female point of view on the idea of romantic modern love in western society. Its main purpose is to dismantle the “knight in shining armor” myth.

It is made with a unique technique of screen-printed animation. Every 20 frames are printed in a grid formation on A3 paper, then scanned and cut to their original form as a running, 25 fps, film.

Director Bio:
Bezalel Academy graduate, class of 2017. Born and raised in Jerusalem, Israel, to parents who immigrated from the former USSR. Practices screen print for the last two years. Now works from a DIY screen-print workshop she built as part of the independent artist collective STRAUS, based in Jerusalem. Also works as a sushi chef, exploring the depths of the Japanese kitchen.
