About the Director

Sam Méndez, a director with 18 years of experience in stop motion animation, is a co-founder of Hobby Creative Studio in Guadalajara. Sam has directed around 200 audiovisusal productions, including TV advertising, short films and animated series with clients such as Warner Brothers and Ford, and is currently the only Latin American to co-direct a music video for the band The Doors.

Carlos Cruz is a Salvadoran/Mexican filmmaker and photographer who has worked for 20+ years in commercials, music videos, and independent productions. He has collaborated with artists from labels and brands such as Warner Music, Sony, and EMI. He now lives in Seattle, and is a video producer and photographer at KEXP for their Live Sessions.

Seth Swirsky is a multifaceted artist whose creative journey spans songwriting, literature, filmmaking, and visual arts. Born in 1960 and raised in Great Neck, New York, Seth spent his formative years immersed in music, television, and childhood games like wiffle ball that fueled his vivid imagination. He began his career as a pop songwriter, crafting melodies that resonate with audiences, and has since expanded his artistic pursuits to include writing acclaimed books, directing films, and exploring the visual arts. Seth's work reflects his passion for storytelling across mediums, inviting audiences to connect with his creations on multiple levels.

About the Director

Sonia Estévez is a director, producer, model maker and stop motion animator. She is a founding partner and administrator of Tik Tak Animation, an independent production company, social initiative cooperative, specialized in stop motion animation. Sonia has professionally directed three short films; Txotxongiloa, Malkoak and Plazer bat and several advertisements in this animation technique. She is currently an active member of MIA (Women in the Animation Industry), CIMA (Association of Filmmaker and Audiovisual Media Women) and Hemen (Association of Women in the Audiovisual Sector and Performing Arts of the Basque Country). She has trained in stop motion animation in Barcelona, at the 9zeros Animation School and at the Cifo of Hospitalet; in executive production at the consulting firm Media Training and has completed the Stop Motion I and II course at Aardman Academy. He took courses in Digital Art and Audiovisual Projects at the School of Arts and Crafts of Vitoria-Gasteiz. She was selected in the CIMA Mentoring 1to1 program (2023-24), in Animation Direction specialty. She studied Forestry and Environmental Chemistry, so she combines audiovisual production and sustainability. She uses stop motion animation as a means to make social issues visible. She teaches several animation courses and workshops for all ages. She has been nominated for the 2024 Goya Awards for her first professional animated short film, Txotxongiloa.

Carmela Murphy is a filmmaker and artist specializing in stop motion animation and screenwriting. She received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Spring 2024. She adores telling narrative and fantastical stories that explore the weird and the wonderful.

AJ Dubler is a stop motion animator, 2D animator, and storyboard artist. They have experience working on stop motion productions and creating their own films. AJ is the recipient of the Presidential Scholarship at SAIC and graduated with distinction in Fall 2023.

About the Director

Born in 1977, in France. Having started out making films alone as a self-taught animator, Izu went on to study at la Poudriere, and in 2009 directed “The Wordcutter”. In 2012, he ventured into genre movies with “The Inn”, followed by “Fierce” (nominated for a Cesar in 2019). He directed “Camera obscura” in 2014, an anthology of short films inspired by the Chauvet Cave in Ardeche (France). In 2020, he joined forces with director Hefang Wei to set up Weilaï Productions (animation and live action).

About the Director

Ilya is a multimedia artist based between Jerusalem and Prague. He was born in Moscow and moved to Israel in 1999. In 2023 he got a MGA degree in the Illustration and Graphics studio of UMPRUM(Prague) after receiving BCA in Visual Communication at Bezalel Academy, Israel. Mainly focuses on topics of time, identity and mystification, through mediums of illustration, animation, cinema, video art, puppet theater and their fusion.

About the Director

Ivan is a Spanish Art Director/Motion Designer with 15 years of experience working in advertising and motion graphics. He worked for some of the most relevant advertising agencies in Spain, creating work for a variety of international brands. In 2015 he moved to the U.S. and has worked as both a freelancer and in-house staff for several motion design studios for brands such as Meta, Netflix, MTV and Adobe. He studied elementary and high school mostly in Basque. He has written for the news site El Mundo, and Quartz, including the article "Learning a new language changes the way you perceive reality".

Andy is a 3D artist and motion designer from Long Beach, California. With over 6 years of experience working as both a freelancer and in-house motion graphics artist, as well as having a degree in music performance, he brings a unique perspective to animation. Andy has produced motion graphics and video content for the New York City Public Library System, Meta, and Run It Up Studios. Outside of work, he has traveled extensively throughout Europe and spent 8 years studying German. This project gave him the perfect opportunity to share his passion for language and culture.

About the Director

Kate Nartker works between animation and weaving to dismantle images, narratives, and material structures. She received an MFA from the California College of the Arts and is an Assistant Professor of Textile Design at the Wilson College of Textiles at NC State University. Her work has been included in exhibitions and screenings throughout the United States and internationally, including The Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco, The Contemporary Austin, and the Hordaland Art Center in Bergen, Norway.

About the Director

Jorge Morais ,independent filmmaker and artist hailing from Vigo, Spain. His artistic journey began at a young age, deeply rooted in various disciplines including drawing, painting, and sculpture, with a particular emphasis on sculpture, which he has naturally excelled in from early on. At the forefront of the graffiti and mural painting scenes, Jorge developed a distinctive style that quickly garnered the attention of commercial brands, enabling him to undertake both artistic and advertising projects. His innovative approach soon led him beyond traditional canvases; he ventured into the realms of decoration and stage design for theatrical productions, successfully leading teams across Spain and Portugal before even completing his secondary education. Pursuing his passion for Fine Arts, Jorge explored diverse professional avenues, intertwining his expertise in scenography, painting, and illustration throughout Galicia and Portugal. This exploration culminated in his involvement in various projects, art exhibitions, and advertising campaigns. As a founding leader of New Order Productions, a collective of emerging artists, he gained invaluable insights into artistic expression and team leadership—experiences that bolstered his confidence to delve into animation following his graduation from the Faculty of Fine Arts. In 2010, Jorge made a significant mark in the animation industry with the release of The Painter of Skies, his inaugural animated short film, which served as the culmination of his Master’s degree in animation. The film achieved remarkable acclaim, being selected for over 300 festivals and winning 125 awards worldwide, establishing Jorge as a prominent figure in the field. Following this milestone, he embarked on a series of enriching journeys across studios and production companies in Portugal, England, Italy, and ultimately Germany. This phase allowed him to diversify his skills and deepen his expertise in various aspects of production, particularly in animation and production design, thus shaping Jorge Morais into a multifaceted artist poised to continue making significant contributions to the world of film and art.

About the Director

Steven Martini's first film was as an actor when he was cast in 90's comedy Major Payne. His first script as a co-writer was Goat on Fire and Smiling Fish, which won Toronto International Film Festival Discovery Award. His second co-written screenplay, LymeLife, which he was also Producer and Composer won the FIPRESCI prize at TIFF in 2008. BitterSweet is Steven's first film as a solo writer/director. After learning of his own place on the spectrum of autism, Steven became part of the the Easter Seals Disability Film Festival as a supporter and judge. This film explores aspects of being on the spectrum.
Producer Gabriela Kulaif is a Syrian-Brazilian Producer/Actress based in Los Angeles, California. She started her career working in Advertising and Photography, before getting into Film. Over the course of 2020-21 she produced and starred in her first feature film, "BitterSweet", written by her husband Steven Martini. She also produced the satirical comedy feature "Fourth Grade", starring Teri Polo and William Baldwin. Steven and Gabriela made this film in celebration of their love and marriage.

About the Director

Anthony Hand is a first-time filmmaker leveraging his 20+ years’ experience in product design and project management to embark on a new creative journey in telling original stories that celebrate the LGBTQ+ experience. Recently, Anthony worked at PayPal designing web-based software productivity tools, while also volunteering on PayPal’s employee Global Pride Steering Committee. Previously, Anthony worked at DTS, second in the immersive audio market behind Dolby, leading a small design team that elevated the user experience of DTS’ consumer, business and studio apps and tools. In his personal life, Anthony is an LGBTQ+ activist and community leader, recently serving as President of the Board for the Silicon Valley Gay Men’s Chorus. Anthony frequents local and national theater and cabaret, has seen every season of RuPaul’s Drag Race since Season 1, and is a recovering comic book geek.Since High School, Justin has made shorts and even took the leap and made two feature films. With one, “Slate Yourself,” currently on Amazon Prime. Addicted to storytelling, Justin is always writing and thinking of the next great story to make us laugh, think, dream and believe. With “Post Infest,” Justin was inspired by the devastating effects of the Pandemic and how we move forward in the face of change and past the trauma induced by a surreal world. Using humor, Justin hopes to provide a catharsis for those like him who were traumatized by the terrible events of 2020. Beyond that, Justin hopes to expand the short into a feature film that Steven Spielberg would be proud of.

About the Director

Jeff Man grew up in an immigrant family that bonded over watching movies together. In college, he majored in journalism in hopes of becoming the next Roger Ebert, but fell in love with making films when he bought a camera and learned to shoot and edit. In 2010, he moved to Los Angeles and began working for writer-director Jay Duplass. While working for Jay, Jeff continued honing his craft by making low-budget shorts. In 2012 he was accepted into the Armed with a Camera Fellowship for emerging artists by Visual Communications, an Asian American non-profit media organization. In 2023 the Duplass Brothers produced Jeff's first feature film, PAPER MARRIAGE, which he wrote, directed and starred in.

About the Director

After his parents brought him to see a screening of Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" (He was six at the time) Brady decided that he was going to become a director. He promptly began creating stop-motion films and had graduated to iPad based production until, after a chance encounter with Rob Reiner, he decided to become an actor first. During their brief conversation Mr. Reiner convinced Brady that in order to better understand what he was asking the actors to do on screen it would be best if he understood what it was like to be on the other side of the lens. Brady started with roles in short films, television and off-Broadway theatre. He studied Meisner with Jim Parrack at Playhouse West Brooklyn Lab and trained with James Franco, Kathleen Turner, Ally Sheedy and Leven Rambin among others. A graduate of the College of Preforming Arts (COPA) at the New School (BFA May 2022). Brady is an MFA candidate attending NYU Tisch at the school of Dramatic Writing. Brady is currently working on several projects through his mr.weirdbob production company.

With roots in Miami, Austin and New York City, Joel Fendelman has written, produced and directed a number of award-winning narrative and documentary films. Joel most recently received an IDA Documentary Award for his fourth feature film "Man on Fire", a documentary about a white Texas preacher who self-immolated in his birth town of Grand Saline in order to bring attention to the unrepented racism there. The film uses the act as a vehicle to explore racism in small town East Texas and indirectly America as a whole. "Man on Fire" premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in January 2018 and had its broadcast premiere on PBS Independent Lens during the 2018-19 season. In 2016, Joel’s short film "Game Night", a film about aging and unfulfilled dreams, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and won best super short at the Savannah Film Festival. His second narrative feature film "Remittance" was filmed in Singapore and the Philippines and follows the story of a Filipino mother who travels to Singapore to work as a maid in order to bring a better life to her family back home, but in the process finds her own empowerment amongst the servitude. The film looks at class, identity and the universal human experience that crosses all these boundaries. Remittance won many festival awards including "Best actress" and "Best Screenplay" at the Brooklyn Film Festival and is currently being distributed worldwide. In 2011, Joel completed his first dramatic narrative feature "David", a coming of age story about identity and friendship between a Muslim and a Jewish boy in the ethnic neighborhoods of south Brooklyn. The film screened at the Rome and Montreal World Film Festival, which awarded the film its prestigious Ecumenical Prize, and at many other venues around the globe. It also sparked conversations within and between Jewish and Muslim religious groups universally and continues to be a desired resource for teaching tolerance amongst children. Joel strives to embrace socially conscious stories that deal with religion, social class, minorities and communicates the underlying connection between us all.

She also works with other broadcast news, documentary and digital content clients. Her producing and reporting credits include docs for PBS Frontline, as well as Smithsonian Channel.

As an emerging filmmaker, Lara produced and co-filmed/directed and executive produced the documentary short, On Beyond Fences—a film about reform and redemption inside Maine State Prison. It began its life as a project for the Maine Media Workshop+College in Rockport Maine.
She oversaw the post-production phase and is currently leading the marketing and promotion of the film.

Lara loves visual storytelling and finding compelling people, places and pictures to help convey those stories. She's most passionate about those that shine a light on under-reported issues and result in positive change.

She is currently the Director of Production of Hornet, a commercial production company and design studio, and has produced over 50 commercials for major brands. Her films have been presented at many international festivals and venues including the Melbourne International Film Festival, the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival, the Split Film Festival in Croatia, the Darklight Festival in Dublin, the Anchorage International Film Festival and Reel Women International Film Festival. Her short, Dress Up, won Best Narrative in the DIGIt 2006 and was released by Cinequest in November 2006. Her multimedia installations have been presented at performance venues including the Interferences Biennale, the Kitchen and the Apollo in New York and Le Lieu Unique in Nantes, France. She also founded EXchange, a short film showcase that traveled from Accra, Ghana to Guadalajara, Mexico, going to a total of twelve cities in ten countries from 1999 to 2004.

Leah Smith is a filmmaker based in Austin, TX. With a foundation in experimental filmmaking, she has created rhythmic live tion pieces like “Jump” (super 8), and also co-wrote and directed the music centric short “Beach-O” (16mm). She is the co-author of the book Dirt Cheap, Real Good: A Highway Guide to Thrift Stores in the Washington DC Area (2004 Capital Books). After moving to Austin in 2005, Leah opened a shop and gallery space, called The Opera House, where she promoted and contributed to the local underground art and music scenes. Nowadays she has returned to her roots in filmmaking, striving to make films cheaply that she can create in her living room. She uses stop-motion animation techniques as seen in “Quilt” and “Cat Picnic/Flower Picnic”. Her future plans include alter ego Infinite Fontaine’s (Instagram @Infinite_fontaine) comedic experiments with paper cut-out animation and to eventually develop a short animated series.

In December, they produced their short film debut "MEOW!", an absurd drama finalised in May 2024. In May, Michal and Ariel’s film “Love Bites” was selected for the 2024 edition of the Straight 8 film festival which screened at the BFI IMAX in London earlier this year. This August, they also premiered absurdist comedy-horror play “Corpse Flower” at the Edinburgh Fringe, celebrated as a “Hidden Gem” by the Fringe Review Magazine. Damian Wampler is a multi-faceted artist, hailing from Delaware. With a diverse background spanning diplomacy, photography, screenwriting, and graphic novel creation, Wampler has transitioned seamlessly into the world of film directing. Wampler's journey began as a Peace Corps volunteer in Kyrgyzstan, where he cultivated a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and narratives. Influenced by a wide array of arts and mediums, Wampler draws inspiration from the works of legendary photographers such as Steve McCurry, documentary photographers, and classic visionaries like Edward Curtis. These influences infuse his filmmaking with a profound sense of realism and cultural authenticity. Wampler's directorial style can be described as a fusion of neo noir, hyper-realism, and surreal drama, with a keen focus on themes of identity. His films delve into the complexities of the human condition, often navigating the blurred lines between reality and fantasy.

Jules has been sober for a year, but she can’t stop vomiting goldfish. Striving to put her life back on track, she must preserve control when a fish enthusiast unexpectedly enters her life.

About the Director

Wendi Tang is a Los Angeles-based writer/director. She graduated from NYU Tisch/Stern dual degree program. Wendi's work focuses on character-driven stories that explore various corners of female narratives. Her short films have been selected by numerous Oscar-qualifying film festivals worldwide, including Flicker's Rhode Island IFF, the Norwegian Short Film Festival, deadCenter Film Festival. She is a 2022 NYC Women’s Fund winner, a Sundance Uprise Grant Fund Finalist, and a BAFTA Connect Member. Her upcoming project, Fishtank, is the Tribeca Women Filmmaker’s Program Winner and the Film Pipeline Short Script Competition Winner in 2022. She’s currently developing her first feature film.
